This was a self-initiated project following my completion of the Domestika online course, Data Visualization and Information Design. Having recently moved from D.C. to NYC, I wanted to create something highlighting my old city.
The color palette is very important for any design project. Color adds to the visual hierarchy and can tie in additional information. For this D.C.-themed piece, I went with red, off-white, blue, and pink. The pink is a nod to D.C.’s historic relationship with Cherry Blossom tree.

The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center has five specialty tours: Halls of the Senate, Votes for Women, Indigenous Peoples in Capitol Art, Heroes of the Civil Rights and an outdoor tour of the Capitol grounds. As an avid reader, I occasionally pick up a book so good that I am drawn to create a meaningful tribute to it. 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez is absolutely one those books.
Using the literary symbols of the butterfly and golden fishes from the novel, I created a pattern to capture the sense of endlessly repetition present in the book.
